the gym…..

February 10, 2010 at 11:13 pm (Thoughts....both random and necessary)

Cody and I joined a gym back last September to get us off our butts and into better shape.  In going I have learned so much about people, the ways they do things and just the quirky-ness of the ultimate gym-goers.

My gym pet peeves include: people who talk on their cell phone during any course of their gym time or talk on their headless phone sets; people who hog machines when there is a 20 minute limit and they have been on them for over 45; people who grunt while lifting weights (yes it looks heavy but do you have to make noises to lift that much?); meat heads who look at themselves in the mirror while lifting weights (no your muscles aren’t big and staring at them is not helping); and lastly, the people who wear gloves to lift weights (do the handles of the nicely padded machines really hurt your hands? suck it up and get some calluses, you’re men!)

The treadmillers – There are a few types of treadmillers (I can talk about them because I look goofy when I run, or that’s what Cody tells me.)

  1. The ones that look like naturals, run quietly and smoothly for long periods of time without looking exhausted (your marathon runners or people who really enjoy running and look good doing it)
  2. The loud pounding runners that are just too awkward to be using this machine in the first place
  3. The people who run like gazels (mostly women who have long legs and short bodies, they run fine, just looks weird
  4. The people that slow walk on the machines thinking they are actually getting exercise but they could/should be walking a little faster, its suppose to hurt, the more it hurts, the better you are doing, go faster!
  5. The girls who like to swing their pony tails while they run, thus their heads must go in a swirling motion making them look like complete idiots
  6. Girls who don’t wear proper bras (both large women and small alike, you still need a sports bra, maybe two!) You’re gonna have black eyes after you finish….tame those things down!
  7. The people who run flat footed….also applies to #2
  8. The people that think its freaking gossip hour and take up 4 treadmills in a row and talk the whole time…not really working out. Keep your talking to a minimum, get your work out done and leave, that way I don’t kill my ear drums because I’ve turned my I-pod up so loud to drown you out!
  9. People who wear short shorts while running, yes they will ride up and you will constantly have to pull them down, check your closet for longer ones, this happens to you every single day….get the memo!!
  10. The ultimate spandex runner….I have seen both large people and small people in spandex and I honestly believe that there should be a license to wear it. Some bodies were made for it and some weren’t (mine wasn’t). AND when you sweat and I can see it growing in your crack while you run, makes me want to vomit.

THE END

more projects

January 11, 2010 at 3:58 pm (Around the House....)

So we got excited about more house projects this weekend. Plus Cody loves them! On Saturday we replaced the faucet on our guest bathroom sink. We are trying to change everything to a darker finish, not the gold/silver look.  On Sunday we decided to replace the front and back door knobs/locks. Again, taking off the gold and replacing it with a darker finish. This includes kickplates, door knockers etc. After getting that completed, Cody started looking at our closet (it was a disaster). For a long time now we have discussed a closet organizer type thing with built-in drawers, the bars for clothes, shelves etc. Well we finally broke down and designed one for each side (one for me and one for Cody). After 3 trips to home depot yesterday and one trip to Lowes (these include the door knob trips), it’s not quite complete but it’s getting there. We wrapped up my side last night a little before 10pm and I am only lacking one drawer to complete it. Tonight, Cody’s side that gets remodeled. Will add pics soon but its the closet maid system. It looks really good and everything is so organized!

Our list is still quite long for other projects but we are getting to cross quite a bit off these days.

January 4, 2010 at 8:49 pm (Just life)

These are in my head and I thought I would jot them down.

1. give up caffine and all carbonation.

2. be more patient

3. keep up with our workout routine 4 to 5 times a week. start running 3 miles rather than 2.

4. more to come as I think of them

birthday weekend……..

January 3, 2010 at 10:53 pm (Just life)

This weekend Cody took me to the Dallas World Aquarium for an early birthday outing, since my birthday falls on a Monday.  Overall, it is a great little place to visit. Everywhere you turned there was something new to see. http://www.dwazoo.com/d/

We also went to the Bodies Exhibit…which I would recommend saving your money if you are thinking of going. Not what I thought it would be, interesting but not worth the money. http://www.bodiestheexhibition.com/

Mexico….Menard…..Canyon

December 29, 2009 at 5:05 pm (Trips)

After way too much food (pico and great guacamole) and lots of mexican beer, our trip was a success. It was absolutely amazing, and you can’t beat fishing with your two favorite boys!

our 24 hours of craziness:

Our flight out of Mexico was delayed so we caught another one. Arrival into San Antonio was at 11:40pm on the 23rd (we actually were the last plane to land in San Antonio due to the rain the rest were having to fly into Austin).  After getting our bags, getting our car and the rest of our things at Jarrott’s house, all 5 of us proceeded to drive to Menard  in 3 cars arriving at 4:20am. Cody and I got up and got dressed and left Menard at 11:00am to drive to San Angelo to eat lunch with Mynot, Pop and JB. Departed from San Angelo at 2pm to drive to Canyon. Just south of Lubbock the ice began. From the Lubbock airport to Plainview (approximately 30ish miles) took us 2 hours. I drove 15mph. Just south of Hale Center I hit a large patch of ice and spun out of control towards the guard rail and into a snow bank. Someone was watching out for us because, miraculously, got out of it! Arrival in Canyon was around 9:30pm, just in time to exchange gifts with everyone! WHEW! Glad that’s over!

tis the season…continued

December 13, 2009 at 3:47 pm (Just life, Trips)

Cody and I worked last weekend and filled jars of goodies for our co-workers, neighbors and family members. We really had fun making all of the mixes, even though it was quite a mess! I was able to make some labels on the computer with the recipes on them etc. Even though they all turned out well, there’s a few things I would change about the presentation, but overall a very nice fun gift for the holidays.   Recipes we made: Buttermilk Pancake mix, Russian Refresher Mix, Corn Bread, and Hot Chocolate. I also tested out the chocolate pudding recipe but only was able to make one or two jars.

the truth about sodas, carbonation and caffine

December 8, 2009 at 2:20 pm (Just life, Thoughts....both random and necessary)

A while back I found an article regarding sodas, carbonation and caffine and the effects on our body that I thought I would share.  I barely drink sodas anymore, I don’t buy them so we don’t have them around. If I do have anything its rootbeer but even that I found has startling effects.  Who knew that carobation and caffine depletes calcium in our bodies???

Here’s the article from Yahoo.

Soda, pop, cola, soft drink — whatever you call it, it is one of the worst beverages that you could be drinking for your health. As the debate for whether to put a tax on the sale of soft drinks continues, you should know how they affect your body so that you can make an informed choice on your own.

Soft drinks are hard on your health
Soft drinks contain little to no vitamins or other essential nutrients. However, it is what they do contain that is the problem: caffeine, carbonation, simple sugars — or worse, sugar substitutes — and often food additives such as artificial coloring, flavoring, and preservatives.

A lot of research has found that consumption of soft drinks in high quantity, especially by children, is responsible for many health problems that include tooth decay, nutritional depletion, obesity, type-2 diabetes, and heart disease.

Why the sugar in soft drinks isn’t so sweet
Most soft drinks contain a high amount of simple sugars. The USDA recommendation of sugar consumption for a 2,000-calorie diet is a daily allotment of 10 teaspoons of added sugars. Many soft drinks contain more than this amount!

Just why is too much sugar so unhealthy? Well, to start, let’s talk about what happens to you as sugar enters your body. When you drink sodas that are packed with simple sugars, the pancreas is called upon to produce and release insulin, a hormone that empties the sugar in your blood stream into all the tissues and cells for usage. The result of overindulging in simple sugar is raised insulin levels. Raised blood insulin levels beyond the norm can lead to depression of the immune system, which in turn weakens your ability to fight disease.

Something else to consider is that most of the excess sugar ends up being stored as fat in your body, which results in weight gain and elevates risk for heart disease and cancer. One study found that when subjects were given refined sugar, their white blood cell count decreased significantly for several hours afterwards. Another study discovered that rats fed a high-sugar diet had a substantially elevated rate of breast cancer when compared to rats on a regular diet.

The health effects of diet soda
You may come to the conclusion that diet or sugar-free soda is a better choice. However, one study discovered that drinking one or more soft drinks a day — and it didn’t matter whether it was diet or regular — led to a 30% greater chance of weight gain around the belly.

Diet soda is filled with artificial sweeteners such as aspartame, sucralose, or saccharin. These artificial sweeteners pose a threat to your health. Saccharin, for instance, has been found to be carcinogenic, and studies have found that it produced bladder cancer in rats.

Aspartame, commonly known as nutrasweet, is a chemical that stimulates the brain to think the food is sweet. It breaks down into acpartic acid, phenylalanine, and methanol at a temperature of 86 degrees. (Remember, your stomach is somewhere around 98 degrees.) An article put out by the University of Texas found that aspartame has been linked to obesity. The process of stimulating the brain causes more cravings for sweets and leads to carbohydrate loading.

Carbonation depletes calcium
Beverages with bubbles contain phosphoric acid, which can severely deplete the blood calcium levels; calcium is a key component of the bone matrix. With less concentration of calcium over a long time, it can lower deposition rates so that bone mass and density suffer. This means that drinking sodas and carbonated water increases your risk of osteoporosis.

Add in the caffeine usually present in soft drinks, and you are in for even more trouble. Caffeine can deplete the body’s calcium, in addition to stimulating your central nervous system and contributing to stress, a racing mind, and insomnia.
